Robert “Bob” Clayton Booth, 72, died Tuesday, April 20, 2021, surrounded by his loving family after a heroic fight battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Visitation will be held Saturday, April 24 from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi with funeral services following in the chapel at 2 PM. The burial will follow at Brandon Memorial Gardens.
Bob was born June 30, 1948 in Brooklyn, New York which was the setting of many of his fascinating stories, particularly surrounding basketball. He attended the all-boys Brooklyn Tech High School and was always on the basketball court, which ultimately led to his being recruited to play at Seminole Junior College in Sanford, Florida. After two years, he was then recruited to play basketball at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi where he would later become the men’s head basketball coach. During his time in Jackson, Bob met his future bride, Carol McBrayer, who was attending Belhaven College nearby. In 1973, the couple wed and moved to Brandon, Mississippi, where Bob spent the remainder of his life. He worked for the State of Mississippi in the areas of workforce development and job training until he retired in 2004. He was a lifelong member of Brandon Presbyterian Church (PCA) where he served as a deacon. He was president of the Central Mississippi Model Railroaders Association and enjoyed showing his grandchildren the model train layouts at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum. He was also an avid volunteer at the museum. For years he coached youth Upward basketball and volunteered his time to any activity that would get him on the basketball court. Bob was fiercely loyal to the people he loved most and his strong faith in Christ was the most important accomplishment of his life and legacy.
He was incredibly proud of his family and was devoted and loving to them without fail. He was affectionately known as “BB” to his grandchildren. In his final year, he was trapped in his failing body to ALS, but he still had a sharp mind and quick wit and enjoyed sharing stories and reminiscing with visitors.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clayton Booth, of Monessen, Pennsylvania. Survivors include his wife, Carol Booth of Brandon, Mississippi; his daughter, Kathryn Stewart, her husband, Brady, of Madison, Mississippi; and two beloved grandchildren, Ford and Mary Clayton Stewart.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Brandon Presbyterian Church at 209 S College St. Brandon, MS 39042. The family is forever grateful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers during this time. It is our hope in Jesus that we will see Bob again. We are forever thankful for the time God shared him with us.
