Brother Gardner was born in Forest, MS on August 15, 1936, to John Samuel and Dolly Gardner.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Raven Gardner; and his sister, Claude Lee Tadlock.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Darrell Shelley Gardner, or as he called her, “Mama”; two daughters, Joann Whittington, and Sarah Hamm (Daniel); one son, John Gardner (Shelley); four grandchildren, Jacob Hamm (Kathyleen), Jack Hamm, DJ Monk (Brooke), and Cole Barnes; two great-grandchildren, Annie Kaye Monk and Hannah Grace Monk; and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Brother Gardner was a Baptist Minister, who served the members of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church until the time of his retirement. He dedicated his life to spreading the word of God. He was a skilled carpenter and could build just about anything he set his mind to. He loved to work in his garden, loved his church, he loved Mama, but most of all, he loved the Lord.
He spent the past 60 years of his life married to Mrs. Darrell, and his love for her was deep.
Brother Gardner was a joyous soul, his hearty laughter resonating through the hearts of those in his presence. His wife lovingly describes him as a “big jolly man.” He had a knack for spinning tales about his childhood and always had a story to tell. Every day for him was an adventure, and he always brought back stories to share with his children at the end of the day.
He never met a stranger. His humor, banter and quick wit endeared him to everyone he encountered. He loved to pick with everyone and was always equipped with a witty comeback.
As we remember Brother Robert Gardner, let's hold onto the laughter, the tales, and the love he freely shared. May he find eternal peace in the arms of the Lord, and may his memory continue to warm our hearts.
Brother Gardener's wishes were to have no flowers at his funeral, so in lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Pleasant Ridge Cemetery Fund.
