BURIAL: FLORAL HILLS MEMORY GARDENS
VISITATION: 5-8 PM TUESDAY
Robert Jean (Bob) Stephens, 82 went to be with his Lord on May 8, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. Visitation will be at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 5 until 8 pm with services in the chapel of the funeral home on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 2pm and burial to follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl.
Bob was born to William Wallace and Lawnetta Pauline Stephens on February 23, 1929, in Jackson, MS, and grew up in Terry, MS. After graduating from Mississippi State College with a degree in Dairy Manufacturing, Bob was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War from Oct. 1950 until Oct. 1952 as a Tank Commander in the 179th Infantry Division. He was injured in battle but refused the Purple Heart as he said, “the real heroes are the ones who didn’t make it back.”
Upon returning home, he met and later married Nancy Jean Reid on May 29, 1954.
Bob worked in the dairy industry for many years doing product testing. He retired from American Cyanamid in Pearl, in 1990. However, he never retired from serving the Lord. He became a Gideon in 1984 and spent his life in prison ministry, bible distribution, and sharing his love of the Lord. Bob served as treasurer for his local Gideon chapter for many years and spoke to churches statewide. He loved spending time with his family and working outdoors. His kind and gentle ways touched everyone he met.
In addition to the love of his life, Nancy, Bob is survived by 4 children, Bruce and Robin Stephens, Sue and Jim Nash, all of Brandon, Gary and Amy Stephens of Anaheim Hills, CA and Charlie and Deborah Stephens of Wiley, TX. He also has 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family would like to express appreciation for the love, prayers and support of extended family and friends and a special thanks to the caring staffs of the CMMC Radiation Oncology Center and St. Dominic Hospital CCU.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Gideons International to provide bibles, his life’s passion.
