Ronald “Ronnie” DeWitt Black of Brandon, MS passed away of a heart attack on Saturday, February 28, in his home. He was born April 17, 1950, in Meridian, MS.
He spent his early childhood years in Yazoo City. At the age of 10, he suffered the tragic loss of his mother to cancer. Ronnie graduated from Callaway High School in Jackson, and attended both Hinds Community College and Miss. State Univ. Over the years he held a variety of jobs from paper boy, to mechanic, to arborist, to blackjack dealer, to investor.
Ronnie had a great sense of humor and loved living by the reservoir. Working on motorcycles, cars, and planes was a great hobby of his. In the early '70s he designed and tried to patent a fuel-efficient car motor. He earned a pilot’s license and bought his own plane. He would fly his plane to pick his sister up from college on the weekends. He even gave his grandmother her first airplane ride at the age of 89.
He was predeceased by his father J. T. “Blondy” Black (Mississippi State football great and played in the NFL), his mother Shirley DeWeese Black, his step-mother Bernice Boone Black, and his grandparents: DeWitt DeWeese, Harriet Ley DeWeese, John Black, and Nora Tinsley Black.
He is survived by his sister, Janice Black Law (husband: Gwillim Law) of Chapel Hill, NC; his two brothers, Darrell Black (wife: Gennie Black) of Jackson, MS and Dr. Bruce Black (wife: Jill Black) of Ridgeland, MS; several nieces and nephews; and close friends Connie Reynolds and Vay Gregory McGraw.
A graveside service will be held at the Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City, MS on Thursday, March 12 at 11:30 am, followed by a reception/visitation from 1:30 to 3:30 at 5378 Carolwood Drive, Jackson, 39211.
