Russell Harlon Starnes, 61, passed away June 15, 2024 at his home in Jackson, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Burns Starnes and is survived by his mother, Johnnye Denman, of Brandon, Mississippi; his father and stepmother, Harlon and Ann Starnes, of Bean Station, Tennessee; son, Dustin L. Starnes, of Pearl, Mississippi; daughters, Rusti Lynn Jobe (Robert) of Brandon, Mississippi; and Amanda Michelle Sullivan (Zeke), of Fort Riley, Kansas; brother James Randall Starnes, of Bean Station, Tennessee; sister, Robin Starnes Lovell, of Lexington, Tennessee; stepsisters Paula Starnes, of Florence, Mississippi; and Tara Wilburn-Gray, of Bean Station, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Through life he was known variously to family members as Russell, Rusty, Russ, Dad, and PawPaw, and he especially loved those last two.
Russell was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He later worked in the field of optometry. With natural mechanical aptitude, he enjoyed tinkering on and repairing engines and was trained in welding. He had artistic talent and, since boyhood, liked to sketch and paint.
In recent years, he appointed himself to a caretaking role for his partially disabled mother and helped her in many ways. She cherishes the time they spent together and their conversations.
His children and grandchildren were Russell’s world. He loved them dearly and was so proud of each one. They gave him strength during the rough times and joy all of the time. If anything would bring a smile to his face, it was when he talked about his grandsons and granddaughter.
Russell was a devoted member of Faith Assembly Church, Pearl, Mississippi and regularly attended services there. His personal faith was strong and he always strove to live by its tenets.
Although gone to his rest, Russell will be remembered, cherished, and missed by all who loved him.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Faith Assembly of God church, 2065 Murray Drive, Pearl, Mississippi 39208. The celebration of life will be led by Elder Arlen Butz.
