Ruth McMillan Eichelberger was born on July 20, 1923 to Ephraim A. McMillan and Lydia W. McMillan. She passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 and entered into the arms of her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Her family rejoices that she no longer suffers and has received her new body with her Savior.
She was a graduate of Goodhope School and attended East Central Community College for one semester. After the first semester, she was called home to help with the farm because her brothers had been called to active military service during the war. She met that challenge and helped with the family farming duties as needed during those hard days.
She met and married Lewis Broadfoot Eichelberger in 1946, and they had one child, Betty Jo, who was stillborn. She and Lewis lived in the city of Forest and had a small grocery store on the edge of town, “Eichelberger Grocery”. Hard times were easy to find, but they devoted their lives to God and family and had a modest living. Ruth worked in their small grocery store and Lewis had a refrigeration repair business that he worked.
Upon Lewis’ death, in 1966, Ruth began a new chapter in her life. She relocated from town back to Noblin Hill to be nearer her mother and sisters. She built a home and a life back on the land near and dear to her heart.
She continued to live a Godly life, and for many years she served faithfully as The Ladies Sunday School teacher in her church. Her service to the Lord and His church were the most important aspects of her life. She truly epitomized the “Proverbs 31” woman. “Strength and honor are clothing and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eatheth not the bread of idleness.” (Proverbs 31; 25-27). She lived her faith daily as she walked with God.
Much can be said about Ruth’s pioneering spirit. She continued to work outside of the home keeping books for various businesses in and around the city of Forest. She had a good business mind and she helped many find their way into the business world. She was revered in the community as astute business woman with much determination and the Lord’s guidance to help her succeed. In addition to her work outside the home, she tended land and livestock with the help of family to supplement her income.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, and daughter, Betty Jo, as well as her parents: Ephraim and Lydia McMillan. She is also preceded in death by siblings, including: Velma Woods, Robert McMillan, Emmitt McMillan, Clarence “Buster” McMillan, O.Z. McMillan, J.T. McMillan, and Clois Rigby.
She is survived by three sisters: Irma Mayes, Blanche Sorey, and Maude Ware, all of Forest, and a host of nieces and nephews that she loved as her own.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and aides of the Lackey Convalescent Home for the care they provided for Ruth in her last days.
