Sally Odom Guyton passed away peacefully at her home in Brandon, Mississippi, on Monday, January 13, 2025. Sally passed with her daughters by her side after a recent diagnosis of Glioblastoma. Born on March 10, 1948, in Columbus, MS, she was the youngest of the three children of Carolyn Halbert Odom. Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Eldon Guyton who passed in July of 2024 and by her beloved sister, Charlyn Odom Ogden who passed in February of 2024, and her mother who passed in 2009. Sally was a graduate of S.D. Lee High School in Columbus, MS in 1966.
Sally attended Mississippi College for Women and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology. She went on to attend The University of Alabama where she earned her Master of Arts degree in Audiology in 1971.
After dating for 8 years, Sally married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Larry Eldon Guyton, at First Baptist Church in Columbus in 1971. Larry and Sally made their home in Jackson, Mississippi. Sally worked as an audiologist for 45 years. She began her career at Jackson Ear Nose and Throat Clinic and retired from Mississippi Ear Nose and Throat Surgical Associates in 2014. Sally’shobbies included playing Bridge with friends and cheering on the bulldogs. Although she never attended Mississippi State University, Sally was a bulldog through and through. An avid sports fan, you could usually catch her watching football, basketball, or baseball and asking what time the dawgs were playing. Sally’s pride and joy were her daughters, Caroline and Mary Katherine. She loved and supported all their activities and achievements even while being a full-time working mother. Sally loved entertaining and created an atmosphere of hospitality in her home which was often filled with friends and loved ones. As Caroline and Mary Katherine grew up, the Guyton house was always a gathering place for their friends because Sally and Larry loved having their house full. When her daughters married, Sally loved her sons in law like her own and was so proud of Brad and Chad and how they loved and cared for her babies. Sally was often described as sassy, sweet, and smart by family and friends. She was always laughing, and her huge smile could light up a room. One of her favorite titles was being called Lele by her grandchildren who adored her. She took great pleasure in spoiling all of them with sweets treats and bragging about them to anyone who would listen. Sally leaves behind a legacy of hard work and generosity. The way Sally lived her life was a true example of her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Sally lost the love of her life, Larry less than 6 months ago. Together for 61 years, Sally and Larry began dating when they were teenagers. Before Larry’s passing, they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Sally also lost her best friend and sister, Charlyn, less than a year ago. We imagine the reunion of the three of them in Heaven was a joyous celebration. Sally leaves behind many who loved her dearly; daughters Caroline Blanks (Brad) and Mary Katherine Segrest (Chad), her grandchildren, Abby Blanks, Thomas Blanks, Camp Segrest, and Nash Segrest, her brother Chuck Odom (Toula), her brothers in law Michael “Mickey” Guyton (Tami), James “Packy” Guyton, her nephew Robert Ogden (Crissy), and her great-nephew Alexander Ogden. In addition to her family, Sally also leaves behind countless friends who she loved dearly. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Homewell Care Services and, her hospice nurse, Ashley Powell RN with Compassus, for their excellent and compassionate care at the end of Sally’s life.
