Sarah Elizabeth Allison, 91, passed away at her home in Jackson, MS on Thurs. June 29, 2017. She was born in Baltimore, MD on July 10, 1925 to James W. Allison and Beatrix Steinacker Allison. Dr. Allison was a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1953 and received her BS in nursing from Hopkins in 1959. She later received a doctorate degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC. Dr. Allison moved to Jackson in 1976 to be the Nursing Administrator at the Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center. Here she established a high water mark of nursing care, using Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory of nursing. During her tenure one of the reviewing boards visiting the hospital was so impressed with the theory she employed, they returned to observe her staff as they worked. This was a high compliment and a rare occurrence.
Dr. Allison established a foundation in December of 2000 for the purpose of promoting and supporting the continuing development and formalization of the practical science of nursing based on Dorothea E. Orem’s theories. The Orem Collection, the personal papers of a leader in nursing theory and research, will now be maintained and funded through a grant from the Sarah E. Allison Foundation.
