Sarah Elizabeth Dever Dawson died November 25, 2018 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 93. She was a resident of Peachtree Village Assisted Living in Brandon. Visitation is 5-7 pm Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 10 am Friday at the funeral home with a 2 pm graveside at Roseland Park Cemetery in Hattiesburg.
Mrs. Dawson was born on September 13, 1925, to Ben Stone Dever and Norfleete Harper Dever of Hattiesburg, MS. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1941 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1947. She moved to Washington, D. C, where she worked as a secretary for Senator John Stennis for several years before marrying and beginning a family. She later worked as a high school business education teacher in Maryland schools, teaching typing and bookkeeping. In 1970, she and her husband relocated to Gulfport, MS, where she was a member of Handsboro Presbyterian Church and the Elks Ladies Auxiliary. She moved to Brandon, MS in 2002 and was a member of Park Place Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Carlton Dawson, one sister, Mary Anne Cassady, and three brothers, Ben S. Dever, Jr, William H. Dever and Edward B. Dever.
She is survived by her son, John Carlton Dawson, Jr of Gulfport, her daughter, Lynn Dawson Oakes (David) of Brandon, MS, and granddaughters Sarah Oakes and Rachel Oakes of Brandon, MS.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Park Place Building Fund.
