Shermaine McDill “Sherry”, went home to be with her heavenly father Sunday morning October 19, 2014. She passed away peacefully during her brief stay at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
Ms. McDill was born on August 27, 1953 in Louisville, Kentucky to Leonard (Pete) McDill and Juanita Cooner McDill, while stationed at Fort Knox. She was a loving sister, friend and teacher to many who crossed her path. Her life was Christ centered and her passion for life was exhibited in her daily walk with God. She always had a big smile, a kind word and always looked at the bright side of every situation. She accepted her illness as a challenge, and also a blessing. She used her illness for God’s glory which was an inspiration to those around her.
Sherry was a graduate of Decatur High School, and East Central Junior College. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at Mississippi State and her Master’s Degree at University of Southern Mississippi. She taught and retired from Pearl Public Schools, teaching kindergarten, physical education and science for 30 years. She was active in MORA (Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency), and a 30 year member of Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher sorority. During her retirement years she became active at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital as a hospital volunteer, and received a Volunteer of the Year Award. Ms. McDill was an active member of Crossgates Baptist Church, teaching Bible School, greeting visitors, visiting hospital and home bound patients, and participating in several mission trips to Mexico, Honduras and Montana.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard McDill and her mother, Juanita Cooner McDill. Survivors include her brother, Gary McDill and wife, Elizabeth of Conehatta, Mississippi; sister, Cheryl Lynne McDill Kitchel and husband, Dirk of Valdosta, Georgia; nephew, Brad McDill of Conehatta and niece, Savannah Kitchel of Valdosta, Georgia; aunts and uncles: Virginia and Charles Emmons of Brandon Mississippi and Clyde McDill of Jackson, Betty Cooner Duck of Carbon Hill, Alabama, Dot Cooner of Carbon Hill, Alabama, Howard Cooner of Birmingham, Alabama, Dolly Cooner of Detroit, Michigan; several cousins and her church family. Her Sunday School Class played a strong role in her spiritual life providing her with love and support.
Visitation will be at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon from 5 to 8pm on Monday, October 20. Visitation from 12 to 1pm with a Celebration of Life Service at 1pm on Tuesday, October 21, followed by a 3:30pm graveside service in Conehatta Cemetery in Newton County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon’s International, MORA, Crossgates Baptist Church Missions or Esperanza Missions (Honduras).
