on October 22, 2013. He was blessed to have his wife by his side as he laid
down his burdens. Although the world is more empty today, all of us are richer
for having him in our lives.
Steve was born on November 7, 1954 in Grenada, MS. The
youngest child of Holmes Legary and Audrey Lynn Ricks Floyd, he was raised
among a loving family and nurturing community. He attended Kirk Academy
graduating in 1972, followed by Mississippi State University where he received
a Bachelor of Science from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics in
1978 in Landscape Architecture. After graduation Steve set off for Salt Lake City, Utah to
study and develop his trademark naturalistic aesthetic. While there, he became
an avid skier, and cultivated a book’s worth of stories. However, love and
longing for his family brought him back to his boyhood home where he pursued
his dream of bringing beauty to the world through his free-spirited approach to
landscape design. As soon as he saved up enough money by waiting tables he
opened New Earth Landscape Co., LLC, which he grew and nurtured like the plants
he loved into a thriving, three decade old business.

Steve was a generous soul, quick to laugh, ready to help
without question, eager to make friends, and finding adventures everyday where
most of us would miss them. After moving to Jackson, he met and married his
wife of twenty-eight years, Lillian (Lilly) Coulson Floyd. Steve and Lilly
shared a joy of traveling the American west and the country’s National Parks
together. They had two children, Jennifer and Matthew. More than all his many
loves and passions in this world, Steve’s family was his greatest and most
cherished. His light will be sorely missed. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary
Allen Floyd. He is survived by his wife, children, son-in-law, daughter-in-law,
brother, Richard Harold Floyd, and many nieces and nephews. Steve was a member
of Wells United Methodist Church.
