The Rev. Charles Horn

April 20, 1927 — December 17, 2012

The Reverend Charles Kettler Horn of Brandon, MS, 85, joined his heavenly Father Monday morning, 17 December 2012, after an extended period of poor health.

Father Horn was born 20 April 1927, in Bessemer, AL. After a short stint in the U.S. Navy, he attended Sewanee University where he received a B.A. degree. He continued his education at the Virginia Seminary and was ordained into the Episcopal priesthood in 1956.

He began his ministry as a curate in The Falls Church in Virginia. His parish ministry began in Guntersville, AL, after which he served several parishes in the Diocese of AL. In the 1960’s, he worked diligently with several civic groups for healing of racial unrest. During that time, he started a Stew Pot Ministry at Grace Church in AL.

In the 1980s, he was called to MS to serve in parish ministries, at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church in Madison. His ministry was extended to Holy Trinity, Crystal Springs, St. Stephens, Hazlehurst, and The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Terry. In 1994, he retired from active ministry and continued serving areas where he was needed. In 2006, he volunteered at St. Peter’s by-the-Lake, Brandon as interim priest with The Rev. John Stone Jenkins. There he initiated an adult Sunday school class and other instructional classes. The classroom is now named The Charles K. Horn Christian Education Center in appreciation of his ministry. Lots of love and spiritual growth is growing with this dedicated group.

On Friday, 21 December 2012, a Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, Brandon, with internment in the columbarium at St. Peter’s. Visitation and lunch will follow in the parish hall.

Father Horn is survived by his wife, Jane, and two children, Jonathan Horn and Mary Horn of Birmingham. He also leaves stepchildren, Patty and James Lyles of Brandon, Jane Strickland of Arlington, TX, and The Rev. Chip and Beth Strickland of Albany, NY, and grandchildren, Julia Horn, Kettler Horn, Nicolas Broussard, Chris and April Lyles, Jane Clare and Robert Edwards, Emily Strickland, Hannah Strickland, and four great grandchildren.
