Brigadier General Uriel Burton Padgett (MS Army National Guard, Retired) passed away on December 2nd, 2020, at his home in Brandon, MS. He was 86 years old. He was born on October 7th, 1934 in Magee, MS.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mattie Lee Middleton Padgett; children, Steve Padgett (Marsha) of
Pearl, MS, and Deborah Stamps (Grant) of Flora, MS; grandchildren Greg Padgett (April) of Guntown MS,
Alisha Muirhead (Wayne) of Brandon, MS, Jana Dear (Terry) of Florence, MS, and Ashley McCombs
(Jason) of Round Rock, TX; brother Darrell Padgett (Joyce) of The Woodlands, TX, ten great
grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Novice Kennedy Padgett and Luke Padgett of Magee, MS, sisters
Virdue Padgett Stubbs of Van Cleave, MS, and Ruby Padgett Colter (Jerry) of Hendersonville, TN; and
brother-in-law Ralph Stubbs, Jr. of Van Cleave, MS.
Uriel joined the MS Army National Guard in March 1952. He began full-time employment with the MS
National Guard in 1961 and held numerous positions throughout his long career. He was a founding
member of the Special Forces unit for the MS Army National Guard. He attended the first NCOS class in
Mississippi and later instructed that class. Uriel loved Camp Shelby and considered it his military home
away from home. He retired in December 1989 as the Assistant USP&FO and was promoted to Brigadier
General.
Uriel and Mattie enjoyed their retirement by traveling the world. Uriel took up woodworking, Mattie
painted his creations and they attended many arts and craft shows. He remained active in his
community through the Exchange Club of West Jackson, Rankin County Civitan Club, member of Oak Hill
Lodge 553, Magee, MS, charter member of Brandon Baptist Church and American Legion Post 153
Madison.
Uriel was meticulous, punctual, loved to joke, especially if it got him in trouble with Mamaw, loved being
outdoors, gardening, riding his tractor and bush hogging. Music was his passion. He enjoyed singing and
playing the guitar, piano, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, and dulcimer. He loved the Lord, family, friends, the
MS National Guard and the United States of America. He supported all of us in any way he could.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Sat. Dec. 5, 2020 at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl, MS. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Building Fund at Brandon Baptist Church, Brandon, MS.
