Varnie Mae Atkins, 82, went to be with her heavenly father on November 19, 2015. She died peacefully at home, as she wished, after a short illness.
Mae was born on May 1, 1933 in Washington Parish, LA. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James (J.); her parents; and six siblings. She is survived by her son, Jeff Atkins (Sandy) of Clinton, MS; two daughters, Linda Cost (Tim) of Madison County, MS and Nan Cockroft (Darrel) of Richland, MS; five grandchildren, Joshua, Wes (Sassy), and Regan Atkins and Haley and Courtney Cockroft; two great grandchildren, Arianah and Rylan Atkins; one sister, Lucille Wall of Franklinton, LA; one brother, Willis Jarrell of Mobile, AL; one sister-in-law, Susie Esteves of Kenner, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
After Mae and J. married on September 20, 1952, they soon settled in Richland, MS where she lived for almost 60 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Some of her greatest joys were travelling and camping with J., working in her yard and garden, reading her Bible, cooking for her family, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Richland, MS.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 2pm-4pm and on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 10am-10:45am at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Richland, MS. Funeral services will be held at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Richland, MS on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11am with burial to follow in Lakewood Memorial Park South in Jackson, MS.
