Vernon Melvin Parker

March 15, 1940 — January 22, 2025

Morton

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Vernon Melvin Parker, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Melvin, 84, passed away on January 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion to his family.

Born on March 15, 1940, to Lillie and Billy Parker, Melvin was a man whose life was centered on his love for God and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters, four brothers, his grandson Brian Gilbert, one great-grandchild, and his son-in-law Jeff Jones. Though he is no longer with us, the love and wisdom he shared will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

Melvin is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jo Ann Blissett Parker, and their three daughters: Sherry Jones, Janice Gilbert (Tim), and Patty Cumberland (Rodney). He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and five great-grandsons, all of whom were blessed by his guiding presence and unending love.

Throughout his life, Melvin worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He worked in woodworking, managing plant operations and furniture production at DeSoto Furniture and Hood Furniture. In his later years, Melvin enjoyed painting houses and tackling any other work that needed to be done, always willing to lend a hand to his family and church. A lifelong and faithful member of Leesburg Baptist Church, his faith was a central part of who he was, guiding him in every aspect of his life.

Melvin was known for his love of horses, a passion he shared with his grandchildren, teaching them how to ride and enjoy the beauty of these majestic animals. He also loved music, particularly southern gospel and country, which brought him great joy and served as a comforting backdrop to his daily life.

He had a charm and wit that made him a true joy to be around. His storytelling was legendary, with tales from his life that never failed to bring laughter to all who listened. Whether recounting a funny memory or sharing a bit of wisdom with a twinkle in his eye, he had a special way of making every moment brighter. We will continue to share them, bringing the same laughter to those around us that he gave to us all.

An avid outdoorsman, Melvin loved to hunt and fish, and he passed those hobbies on to his grandchildren, teaching them the skills and patience of these pursuits. Beyond that, he took immense pride in teaching his grandkids how to fix almost anything—from motors and cars to electrical work and plumbing—instilling in them the value of hard work, resourcefulness, and perseverance.

Melvin was a man who poured his heart into everything he did. His love for his family was unmatched, and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide his loved ones for generations to come. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the stories, lessons, and love he shared with all who knew him.
