Virginia Ann (Ginger) Barnes, 57, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, surrounded by her family, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation will begin Friday, January 31, 2014 from 4 – 8 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Richland, MS and again Saturday, February 1, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Florence from 10 am until the 11 am Service. Burial will follow in the Zion Hill Cemetery near Braxton, MS.
Virginia Ann Matthews was born on August 10, 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Alton R. Matthews and Mildred Phillips Matthews Amason. She was a graduate of Pearl High School and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Braxton, MS. Ginger’s smile said volumes even when she could not speak.
Ginger was preceded in death by her Daddy; her maternal grandparents, Gus and Evie Phillips and her paternal grandparents, Olif and Willie E. Matthews.
Survivors include her mother and step father, Mildred and James Amason of Braxton, MS; her son, Philip Barnes of Decatur, MS; her sister and brother in law, Theresa and Gene Thomas of Florence, MS; one granddaughter, Emily Barnes of Florida; nephews, Andrew Thomas and wife, Brooke of Flowood, MS and Jacob Thomas of Florence, MS; two step sisters, Mary Amason of Bassfield, MS and Martha Holomon and husband, Ricky of Mize, MS; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers and local Churches that gave Ginger special attention over the past 12 years that she was a resident at Briar Hill Nursing Home.
