Walter P. Mitchell, 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral Services were held Monday, May 23, 2011 from the Chapel of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Richland with burial in Glenwood Memorial Park in Richland, MS. Dr. Kevin Jones officiated the Service.
Walter Purser Mitchell was born on May 20, 1924 in Copiah County, MS to the late Walter Mitchell and the late Effie Virginia Purser Mitchell. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was one of Darby’s Ranger and was an ex P. O. W. He retired from Knox Glass Company in 1983 as a packer/inspector. He had worked there for over 35 years. He was a Mason and a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and he especially loved to garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Myrtis Miller Mitchell in February 2011.
Survivors include his children, Brenda Welch and husband, Richard of Richland, MS and David Mitchell and his wife, Esther of Jackson, MS; one sister, Ruth Able of the Old Pearl Community of Simpson County, MS; three grandchildren, Kristie Mitchell, Christopher Mitchell and Chad Gallagher; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden Mitchell and Shauna Gallagher.
Pallbearers were: Chad Gallagher, Chris Mitchell, Mancil Cliborn, Brent Stephens, Brad Stephens, Alex Whittington and Blake Stephens.
