Wanda Trest Doster, 39, a resident of Leesburg was born March 20, 1974 and passed away on September 7, 2013 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Visitation was held 6-8pm Monday, September 13, 2013 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Funeral services were held at 2pm Tuesday, September 14, 2013 at Leesburg Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Joseph Oster, Rev. Brian Parker, Rev. Danny Henderson and Rev. Jeff Jones officiated the services. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Earl (Bud) Squires, Charlie and Mary Ruth Trest.
Wanda leaves behind her husband, Lang Doster, four children: Trest and Maggie Wingfield, Reagan and Raleigh Doster; her parents, Charles and Earlene Trest; her grandparents, Berta Squires, Bessie and Russell Squires, five sisters, Mary Ann (Terry) Bonita, Myrtle (Dalton) McCarty, Terry (Kevin) Moody, Shelly (Buster) Waltman, Kelly (Donnie) Boykin and her special "little sister" Lea (Bubba)Holifield; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
Wanda received her Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi College in Clinton. After Wanda's children were in school she enrolled in nursing school at Hinds Nursing Allied. She had to withdraw when she began dialysis. She loved nursing and her desire was to go back after her kidney transplant and complete her studies. Lang was the first one tested for the kidney transplant and was a perfect match. Wanda received her kidney transplant in June of 2012. After researching the fairly new pancreas transplant program Wanda chose to go on the National Organ transplant list. January 1, 2013 she received a call to come to UAB and on January 2 she received her pancreas. She was so excited for the first time in twenty-three years she didn't have to take insulin or constantly be checking her blood sugars.
Organ transplants require the recipient to take large quantities of anti-rejection drugs which kill your immune system. Wanda became ill the latter part of February with flu, pneumonia, and other bronchial problems. Over the course of a couple months she was in and out of the doctor’s office frequently. Wanda never gave up, she was already planning the holidays and the trips the kids wanted to take. In May, while we were visiting with Lang's family in Arkansas, Wanda got worse and the doctors at UAB told us to come straight there. She was immediately put into ICU and over the next four months UAB became our home. Wanda was a fighter and three times after the doctors told us she would never get out of ICU she proved them wrong. The last three and a half weeks she was in a medically induced coma.
Wanda was diagnosed with a CMV Virus with the count going to over 800,000, with Graft vs Host Virus (very rare) and was the first patient known to have both of these viruses at the same time. She was waiting to receive a bone marrow transplant but wasn't strong enough for the procedure. Before Wanda was intubated for the last time she gave the doctors permission to use the information they had learned to help in the pancreas research program.
The family would like to thank all those who had a part in Wanda's memorial services, Bro. Joseph Oster, Bro. Danny Henderson, Bro. Brian Parker, and Bro. Jeff Jones for their sweet words at Wanda's services and the staff of Ott & Lee Funeral Home.
The pallbearers were David Parker, Steve Smith, Bubba Holifield, Brady Harrell, Paul Smith, and Joey Cranston.
Wanda loved life; her beautiful smile would light up a room when she entered. She had so many family members and friends who she loved and who loved her, this was evident by so many who came to say their good-byes.
