William J. Hessels, 98, “Our Brave and Handsome Soldier” passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at University Medical Center in Jackson. There will be an entombment service Monday, December 2, 2013 at 10 am at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Hessels of Brandon; daughter, Karen Atkisson and husband Jim of Brandon; grandchildren, Sheri Derden and Holly Gilmer.
Mr. Hessels was a first generation born in this country from Dutch parents on August 5, 1915. He was hardworking, kind and a handsome son raised in New Jersey, working in the family business. Mr. Hessels bravely volunteered to defend our country in WW II and crossed the ocean on ship to follow Patton into battle in the Northern Mediteranean. He was later decorated with many combat medals.
Mr. Hessels fell in love with a beautiful girl stateside thru correspondence and was married 64 wonderful years to a very devoted and loving wife. From their loving marriage came along an adoring daughter of the “Best Father a Girl could ever have.”
He has lived a full and wonderful 98 years, enjoying life to the fullest in excellent long term health. Mr. Hessels traveled over many years across this beautiful country of ours, the USA.
Having trout fished from the Adirondacks to the Ozarks, he loved Outdoor Sports, especially snow skiing, hunting, and was especially proud of his gun collection. He very proudly received the “National Patriots Medal” from the NRA.
Always his time served as our brave soldier was on the forefront of his mind and had sincere wished to see this Country regain it respect on the world front and protect the constitution that he had fought so hard to defend.
Our Brave and handsome Soldier, fought the battle, lived the full life, and now rests in Loving Peace in his families hearts and minds.
